update on my journey with the walt disney company

As my college experience comes to a close, I find myself ready to head back into the professional side of The Walt Disney Company.  Click "Read More" for an official update on my career journey with Disney!

If you asked me right now what I wanted to do with my degree, I would tell you flat out, "I don't know."  As I gear up to finish my degree and move on to my first chapter of adult life, I find myself somehow more lost than I was the day I came to this school as a freshman in 2015.  I'll be honest: college did not go the way I originally thought it was going to go.

I started my career journey in the Childhood Education program, en route to be a teacher.  That didn't work out for me.  I had problems with the School of Education, I didn't like my fieldwork or my classes, and I didn't feel like I was learning anything or becoming a better teacher.  Eventually, I decided the best thing for me to do would be to switch my major.  I decided to switch to Communication Studies, since there were so many people in the department at this school who loved it.  I couldn't have asked for a better department-- I have truly adored all of my classes, and the Communication Studies staff has been nothing short of superb.  I have genuinely loved every moment of chasing this degree, and yet: I'm still unsure of how to apply it to the real world.  Communications is a huge field, and I don't even know where to start.  I'm still trying to "feel out" the field and hone in on one specific branch to explore.

Here's something I do know.  When I went off to the Disney College Program in 2016, everything changed for me.  Working full-time and living independently didn't seem so scary when I was doing what I loved in my favorite place on earth.  I envisioned what it would be like to be out of college, fully independent, and career-oriented.  I loved the idea of the future I built for myself.  Doing the DCP allowed me to build my work ethic and get full-time work experience while fulfilling my life-long dream of working for the Disney parks.  While it wasn't a perfect semester, it was something that I desperately needed in my life.

My past experience with the Disney College Program, and the support of my family, have encouraged me not to immediately explore possible long-term career prospects.  Rather, I have decided that the best thing for me to do post-graduation is complete another Program with Walt Disney World Resort.  This will give me the time and resources to explore professional prospects with the Walt Disney Company while still allowing me to work full-time.

For the past year, this blog has been my voice-- even if only a few listen.  Having tinkerkait has allowed me to develop and explore my writing while keeping track of my journey with Disney.  Above all, it has allowed me to share my passion for this company with the rest of the world.  Everyone who has taken the time to reach out to me with their support and love since starting this blog has a special place on my heart, and therefore, I'm honored to share this exciting life update with you all:

I'm so thrilled to announce that I've accepted my latest job offer with the Walt Disney Company: The Disney College Program at Walt Disney World Resort - Spring Advantage 2020!

Starting this February, I will be living, earning, and learning with the Disney College Program once again.  This time, I'm taking on my dream role: Character Attendant.  Working in Disney Parks Entertainment, specifically on-stage with my favorite characters, has been the goal of mine since I started this journey.  There aren't words in the English language that can capture how excited I am to finally get to fulfill this dream.  I'm still, as I write this post, periodically checking my offer letter to make sure I'm not hallucinating.

As far as tinkerkait goes, park touring posts will be going on the back burner as she goes through a DCP blog phase.  To answer a question I'm sure some of you have, this job is only temporary.  I will not be going full-time with the parks following the end of my Program.  I will only be there up to a year, maybe shorter if extension plans fall through, then I will come back up north to start my career.  Those who know me personally are more than welcome to reach out for official program dates and where you'll be able to find me during my program.

During this exciting time, I find myself overwhelmed as once again stand in front of the most insane, roller-coaster experiences of my life.  There is so much in store for me this year, and I can't wait to share every step of my journey with tinkerkait.  To quote Spaceship Earth, "While no one knows for sure what we'll see or do, I do know it will be quite an adventure-- an adventure that we'll take and make together."

cheers (and also, i love you)
